Maggie Moore Abdow and Debra Wise accept MAAE Award

On May 31st, 2007, The Massachusetts Alliance for Arts and Education (MAAE) awarded Underground Railway Theater the 2007 Champion of Arts Education Award for Outstanding Artists-in-Residence.

This prestigious award honors an artist-in-resident or cultural institutions whose programs promote excellence in arts instructions and stimulate community support.

in Central Square Theater Day
The Central Square Theater Ground Breaking Celebration

On May 1st, 2007, the sidewalk in front of 450 Massachusetts Avenue, the future site of Central Square Theater, the home of resident professional theater companies The Nora Theatre Company and Underground Railway Theater, was overflowing with Cambridge and Boston residents, local business owners, and state and city officials. They all answered the Theater's invitation to become Ground Breakers and join in celebrating Central Square Theater Day, officially declared by both the Commonwealth and City of Cambridge.

Looking At The Life of Galileo - A History Play for Our Times
An inter-displinary exploration of Bertolt Brecht's theatrical masterpiece

Teachers will engage with theater artists, scientists, and historians in an exploration of Bertolt Brecht's science theater masterpiece, The Life of Galileo . Timed to mark the UN's declation of 2009 as the Year of Astronomy , the play will be a point of departure for examining questions that cut across the curriculum:
  • How does science discovery affect our everyday lives?
  • How do we know what we know (or think we know)?
  • How does this play reflect our world today?
For Teachers of Language Arts, Science, History, Classroom Teahcers, Drama, and Arts Specialists.

Grades 5-12

Cost: $100 (stipends, pdps, and continuing education credits available)
