Underground Railway Theater creates dynamic connections between high-quality professional theater and community. Combining actors, puppets and music, URT presents theater of social content and great visual beauty - theater that challenges and delights, informs and celebrates.
The company's sponsors include theaters, schools, universities, concert series, orchestras, churches, peace education groups, community groups and performance series. The Underground Railway Theater is proud to be the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Advancement Grant.
Underground Railway Theater is a member of Actors Equity Association and operates under an agreement between the League of Resident Theatres, Actors Equity Association and the Union of Professional Actors and Stage Managers in the USA.
The Theater was founded in 1976 in Oberlin, Ohio, one of the last stops in the midwestern branch of the Underground Railroad. The company took its name from this chapter in American history, carrying on in a spirit of hope and inter-cultural collaboration.
Past work includes performances with major orchestras throughout the country, residencies at the Smithsonian Institute, and appearances at Lincoln Center, Arena Stage and the Kennedy Center. The company has received citations for excellence from UNIMA (the international guild of puppetry) and has performed in France, Spain, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
