Commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra
In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Boston Symphony Hall, 2000
Keith Lockhart, Musical Director
Boston Pops and Boston Symphony Orchestra Youth Concerts

In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Boston Symphony Hall, the Boston Symphony Orchestra has approached composer Robert Xavier Rodriguez and the Underground Railway Theater to create a musical theater spectacle, to be premiered with the BSO in April 2001.

The finished production will combine a full orchestra with a visual feast of giant colored shadow-puppetry and narrated excerpts from Shakespeare's epic play.

The initial premiere performances will reach an estimated audience of 20,000 people. After the Boston Symphony Orchestra performances, the production of The Tempest will become available to other orchestras across the country, becoming a permanent contribution to the field.

03/29/99: URT designers win an IRNE award!

Cheshire Cat's Grin

Monday, March 29, 1999 at the first annual Independent Reviewers of New England (IRNE) Award Ceremony, URT technical director, Will Cabell and designer-in-residence David Fichter were given an award for the "Best Set Design" for their production of "Alice Underground", which premiered at the Boston Center for the Arts last Spring and will be performed annually in Cambridge and surrounding towns.

The IRNEs (formerly known as the Outer Critics Circle Awards) are chosen by independent critics and focus on those companies and individuals that work in New England but don't always get noticed by the major mainstream critics.
