New Play Stage Reading Series:

Underground Railway Theater is offering two stage readings of new plays that explore issues of faith, humanity, science and politics this fall.

SMALL INFINITIES

Newton's search for science and soul.

Underground Railway Theater (URT) in association with the MIT Office of the Arts, is presenting a free stage reading of SMALL INFINITIES, written by Alan Brody (Associate Provost for the Arts, MIT) and directed by Jon Lipsky (Associate Director/Vineyard Playhouse, Playwright/Museum of Science). The cast includes local favorites: Richard McElvain (playwright, performer in the Nora Theatre Company's Antigone) as Newton, Kim Mancuso (Founder, Pilgrim Theatre) and, of course, our own Debra Wise (Artistic Director, URT).

SMALL INFINITIES explores the life and paradox of the father of modern science, Sir Isaac Newton. An alchemist who believed he had unearthed revelation, Newton was a genius with a medieval mind in the beginning of the modern age. The play traces Newton's obsession with finding the unity of God's design through science, alchemy, and the Bible. Has his life's work, as Newton comes to believe, made him God's assassin?

Post-performance discussion features physicist and novelist, Alan Lightman (Einstein's Dreams) as moderator with panel members from the Greater Boston theater and science community.

When: Wednesday, October 6, 2004 @ 7:30 PM

Where: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 77 Mass. Ave, Room 10-250

A STATE OF GRACE

Stage Reading & Discussion

Extravagant Emotions in the Kitchen

URT's Artistic Director, Debra Wise, is the featured playwright for this original play created from the short stories, essays and poems of artist, poet and activist, Grace Paley. With support of the Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities, this reading will bring together humanist scholars, theater artists, and members of the community in a unique collaborative inquiry into the work of Grace Paley, its significance as American literature, and the creative process of developing new plays. This reading is a continuation of the readings staged at Cambridge Libraries this past spring. Turnout for those events was terrific and we are excited to bring audience members a more developed script for this reading. Stay tuned for more information as we draw closer to the event!

When: Tuesday, November 16, 2004 @ 7:30 PM

Where: Durrell Hall, Cambridge Family YMCA, 820 Mass. Ave, Cambridge
