Education Programming Springs Forward

The play's the thing

Cambridgeport students in 7th and 8th grades have created a working script that is currently in rehearsal to be performed by a cast of 5th and 6th graders. The performance is scheduled for May 5, 2005 with in-school and evening performances. The theme of the play thoughtfully explores the history and stories of American Slavery. The playwrights and actors are very invested in the process and the final script is anticipated to be an in-depth exploration of fictional characters infused with the speeches from historical figures of the time.

The play creation format is being explored in a different way at the after-school sites that are participating in this year's Agenda for Children program. URT is currently offering intensive eight-week theater programs at the Moore Youth Center, C.E.O.C. and the Cambridge YMCA. We are working closely with after-school staff to tailor the program to fit site specific needs. All of the sites are creating shows which are inspired by the ideas and social concerns of the young actors participating. Each play will be performed at a site-specific event at the end of the eight weeks. It's URT's hope that these site intensive events will truly highlight and celebrate the wonderful work happening in the Cambridge after-school sites.

Spring Alive with Arts InterACTion!

URT has been very busy working with the Currier Museum in New Hampshire offering a successful family tour, a full-day teacher workshop and a docent training. This is URT's first collaboration with the Currier and it's been a huge success, serving over 150 museum visitors, teachers and guides.

Our week-long residency at the MFA during spring vacation was equally successful. URT guided families on our special brand of tours exploring paintings by Copley to Pollock. Come join us for our next Art InterACTions appearance, scheduled on Mother's Day, May 8, 2005.

New Partnership with the New Center for Arts and Culture

URT is excited to announce a new collaboration with the New Center for Arts and Culture. We will be developing an interactive performance tour to accompany the New Center for Arts and Culture exhibit, Welcome to My Salon; Jewish Women and Their Salons. URT will develop a tour that explores the power of conversation. The exhibit is currently on view at the Jewish Museum in New York and will tour only to the New Center for Arts and Culture. URT is very excited to be a part of this unique event and looks forward to keeping you up to date about our progress through the summer.
